What is Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid EV?
Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles are an advancement of traditional hybrid cars, allowing you to charge the electric battery from both an outlet and through regenerative braking. Think of it as having an extra fuel tank that you can fill up at home.

The battery is recharged by plugging into a power source, and can also charge via regenerative braking while driving. Bi-directional charging
Available in the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV and the Eclipse Cross Plug-in Hybrid EV
Bi-directional charging is an emerging technology that allows two way sharing of stored energy from an Electric Vehicle on-board drive battery to an external energy consumer via a compatible bi-directional charger.
This technology enables energy sharing applications such as Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and Vehicle to Home (V2H).
Mitsubishi Outlander and Eclipse Cross PHEV’s are Bi-directional capable via the CHAdeMO DC charging system, however to utilise this capability an approved Bi-directional charger is required which is sold separately to the vehicle. Currently, Bi-directional Charger manufacturers have not given any set dates for hardware release into the Australian market.
So whilst V2G and V2H have amazing future potential, they are still an evolving technology and their deployment is still very much the domain of pilot and demonstration projects, such as MMAL’s pilot V2G installations at our Australian Head Office in Adelaide

- How far can I drive my Plug-in Hybrid EV?
The Eclipse Cross Plug-in Hybrid EV has an all-electric range of 54km and the all-new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV has an all-electric range of 84km.
Both vehicles have the reassurance of a petrol hybrid engine that provides complete confidence for longer trips.
Electric range figures are based on sample vehicle testing in accordance with ADR 81/02. Actual results will vary depending on traffic conditions, vehicle conditions and driving style. Lithium-ion cells degrade over time, and any decrease in battery capacity will reduce range.
- Are Plug-in Hybrid EVs good for the environment?
When in all-electric mode, Plug-in Hybrid EVs allow you to drive with zero tailpipe emissions.
- Can I use my Plug-in Hybrid EV to power appliances?
The all-new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV provides vehicle to load capability, which means it can be used as a mobile battery to power a range of appliances. It has two 220-240V AV sockets with a maximum combined 1500W on-board.
- Do Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid EVs offer bi-directional charging?
Mitsubishi PHEV’s are Bi-directional capable via the CHAdeMO DC charging system, however to utilise this capability an approved Bi-directional charger is required which is sold separately to the vehicle. Currently, there are no Bi-directional Chargers available to consumers in Australia, and Bi-directional charger manufacturers have not given any set dates for hardware release for consumers into the Australian market.
- When will an approved Bi-directional charger be available in Australia?
Currently the Wallbox Quasar 1 is the only certified bidirectional charger in Australia – with conditional approval to install and operate only in the state of South Australia. Wallbox have advised that production of the Quasar 1 has been discontinued and is no longer available for consumers purchase.
No other Bi-directional Charger manufacturers have given any set dates for hardware release for consumers into the Australian market.
- When will Bi-directional charging appliances such as VG2 be available in Australia?
The short answer is, there is no set date or time. Whilst V2G has amazing future potential, it is still an evolving technology and its deployment is still very much the domain of pilot and demonstration projects, such as MMAL’s pilot V2G installations at our Australian Head Office in Adelaide.
Connection of a Bi-directional charger to the grid is currently only authorised in South Australia under conditional approval. Other Australian State jurisdictions have not indicated any timing to follow a conditional approval process, and for V2G to be realised Bi-directional Charger manufacturers also need to commit to releasing hardware for consumers into the Australian market.
To enable Bi-directional charging applications such as V2G Australia wide, the Australian Standards that provide energy distributors and hardware suppliers with a clear pathway to grid installation and approval for V2G must be revised to include specific provisions for Bi-directional chargers and their applications such as V2G.
This revision process is currently in progress, and MMAL is working closely with all stakeholders to ensure Mitsubishi PHEV customers across Australia can access bi-directional capability once this process is complete.
- How do I charge a Plug-in Hybrid EV?
Using the vehicle’s dedicated charge port and cable, the drive battery can be recharged by one of these methods:
- Normal Charging (AC 230-240V / 10A) with a standard domestic power point
- Normal Charging (AC 230-240V / 15A) using a home or public charging device (EVSE)
- Quick Charging at a public charging station
You can also charge while you drive using the Regenerative Braking System.
- How long does it take to charge a Plug-in Hybrid EV?
- Approximately 9.5 hours using a standard domestic power point (AC 230-240V / 10A)
- Approximately 6.5 hours using a home or public charging device (EVSE) (AC 230-240V / 15A)
- Approximately 38 minutes for an 80% charge, using a public charging station
- Are Plug-in Hybrid EV vehicles covered by the Mitsubishi Diamond Advantage 10 year warranty?
Yes, Plug-in Hybrid EV vehicles purchased from 1 October 2020 can count on it. The warranty includes:
- 10 year/200,000 km (whichever occurs first)New Car Warranty*
- 5 year Perforation Corrosion Warranty
- 8 year / 160,000km (whichever occurs first) Drive Battery Warranty
*Mitsubishi’s Standard New Car Warranty is 5 year/100,000 km (whichever occurs first). You may also be eligible for an Extended New Car Warranty up to 10 year/200,000 km if you’ve had all scheduled services done through the authorised Mitsubishi Motors Dealer Network. Some customers are excluded such as government, taxis, rentals and selected national business.

- Do I receive Roadside Assistance with the purchase of a Plug-in Hybrid EV?
Yes, all new Mitsubishi vehicles receive 12 months Roadside Assist. Plug-in Hybrid EV vehicles are not eligible for Auto Club Membership.
- What kind of fuel does a Plug-in Hybrid EV use?
91 unleaded fuel.
- Does the drive battery degrade over time?
Gradual capacity loss of the drive battery over its lifetime, known as degradation, is a normal characteristic of this technology and is not caused by defects in materials or factory workmanship. As such, degradation is not covered under the New Car Warranty.
From 22MY Outlander Plug-in Hybrid vehicles onward, The Drive Battery Capacity Care Program provides for protection against degradation. Subject to the terms of the Program, when fully charged, if the battery does not retain at least 66% of its useable energy capacity Mitsubishi Motors will (at its sole discretion and election) repair, replace or otherwise treat the drive battery without cost such that it retains at least 66% of its useable energy capacity.
The Drive Battery Capacity Care Program will apply from the date of first registration for the warranty period of 8 years or 160,000kms (whichever occurs first).⋄1
To claim under the Drive Battery Capacity Care Program, you are required to present your vehicle to an authorised Mitsubishi Motors Dealer.
